Maria Mangual

Maria Mangual (1944 -2007) did not plan on becoming an activist and organizer but her time as a student at the University of Illinois Chicago Circle Campus proved to be life-changing. The feminist movement was just beginning and Mangual attended several women’s meetings. She did not completely buy into the movement saying, “For me, the feminist movement was very much about self instead of community.” But seeds were planted within Mangual’s mind and heart. In 1973 she founded Mujeres Latinas en Acción, a small social service organization to help runaway Latina teens. Over the decades it grew and now offers after-school programs, domestic violence counseling and parent support programs among other services.

Why this stop? In addition to the original Pilsen neighborhood headquarters, Mujeres Latinas provides services in Brighton Park not far from the Orange Line Kedzie stop.
